Job Description:

The Public Health Technician II will:

  • Perform moderately complex technical and analytical duties in the training, collection and reporting of cancer registry data in the Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (CESB)

  • Train medical providers and others in cancer reporting methods

  • Perform International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) coding of cancer data

Job Description

In this key role, you will oversee Network Cancer Program accreditation for six sites, cancer conferences and quality outcome studies using registry data. You will work with supportive physicians and lead our strong and committed Oncology Data Management team to maintain Commission on Cancer (CoC) and Texas Cancer Registry (TCR) requirements, as well as establish and develop collaborative relationships with physicians, administration and other departments.

Required Qualifications

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), to include at least 2 years experience in network cancer registry management.

  • CTR certification required

  • Bachelor’s degree and RHIA/RHIT preferred.

  • Must have knowledge of statistics, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, cancer registry software and databases.

  • Must also be able to interpret data/statistics and have working knowledge of MS Office.

  • Requires excellent communication, teamwork and leadership skills.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing a multi-site registry and leading Commission on Cancer Accreditation, be able to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, possess strong quality reporting skills and demonstrate interest in leading a growing and innovative oncology data management program.

Job Description:

  • Will consult with local health agencies(i.e., hospital personnel, private physicians) to implement systematic methods of casefinding and quality assurance to ensure the identification and reporting of all cancer cases to the Cancer

Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (CESB), Texas Cancer Registry(TCR).

  • Will assist with performing cancer data submission uploads from reporting facilities.

  • Work will be performed with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for complete and accurate data collection in accordance with state law as detailed in the Texas Cancer Incidence Act, Commission on Cancers Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards, and TMH guidelines.

  • Ensure that all healthcare cancer information is thoroughly reviewed and assigned appropriate codes and staging such that statistical data base is accurate, complete, and timely for required reporting.

  • Participates in continuous improvement, reporting, and follow-up programs in order to meet departmental goals.

  • Assists manager in all aspects of cancer program activities.

  • Coordinates casefinding and data collection activities in accordance with the Texas Cancer Incidence Reporting Act, Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), and TMH Cancer Committee. (EF)

  • Analyzes and reviews the healthcare documented in various sources that includes system records as well as correspondence with physician offices and other facilities to obtain all necessary cancer information assuring each case is thoroughly and completely abstracted. (EF)

  • Participates in planning and conducting of a continuous improvement program to ensure accurate, complete, and timely data collection. (EF)

  • Assures department productivity and data accuracy is maintained at appropriate levels to meet agency requirements. (EF)

  • Maintains and actively expands knowledge of the cancer disease process, diagnostic methods and procedures, and all possible treatment variations. (EF)

  • Assists with development and maintenance of procedure manuals and reference aids.

  • Identifies continuing education needs of the department and participates in staff development.

  • Assists with reporting of data to the Texas Department of Health (state central cancer registry), National Cancer Data Base, physicians, and other authorized users in accordance with departmental procedures for release of information.

  • Demonstrates the components of the ICARE values statement.

  • Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to code cancer data utilizing International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICDO), FORDS, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), SEER Summary Stage and Texas Cancer Reporting Handbook.

  • Background in statistics, medical terminology, and anatomy. Maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Two years experience as a cancer registrar or one year experience and completion of a Cancer Registry Management Program approved by National Cancer Registrars Association.

Education Qualifications:

  • High school degree or equivalent.

  • Some college, including medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Board for Certified Registrar (must have certification).

Cancer Registrar II
St. David’s Medical Center
 
Job Description
Maintains components of Cancer Registry in accordance with American College of Surgeons (ACOS) requirements for approved cancer programs and Texas Cancer Registry reporting requirements. Interacts with medical staff, staff of physicians’ offices and other health care providers, and staff of various hospital departments in order to maintain program components. Shares her time between North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s Medical Center.
Interacts a great deal with the Medical Staff as well as other hospital departments; handles confidential information; makes difficult decisions; utilizes computer equipment; keeps current on legal requirements; keeps current on ACOS and Texas Cancer Registry requirements. Strong personal computer skills with two years experience using personal computers. Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally in writing, in person and over the telephone.
  • Abstracts patient records in accordance with ACOS, Texas Cancer Registry and hospital Cancer Committee requirements.
  • Identifies all reportable cases to be abstracted.                               
  • Performs data collection for patient care evaluation studies.
  • Works with registry manager and physicians in performing quality assurance of registry data.
  • Coordinates Tumor Conferences.
  • Coordinates Cancer Committee meetings.
  • Performs follow-up functions as necessary to complement work of PRN follow-up staff.
  • Supports the management team to improve productivity, efficiency and employee morale.
Required Qualifications
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or CTR-eligible.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years cancer registry experience
  • Course work in and/or two years experience using medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes and treatment methods.
